What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple number calculated from your height and weight. It was created by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1800s and is now used worldwide by doctors and researchers as a quick screening tool to assess whether someone may be underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or obese.
Think of it as a rough "health snapshot." It isn't perfect — a highly muscular athlete may score as "overweight" even though they're very fit — but it remains one of the most widely used and well-researched health indicators available.
| Category | BMI Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 | May indicate insufficient nutrition or other health concerns. |
| Normal weight | 18.5 – 24.9 | Associated with the lowest risk for weight-related health issues. |
| Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 | May increase risk of conditions like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. |
| Obese | 30.0 and above | Associated with significantly higher risk of serious health conditions. |
